The Itaipu Dam is a huge hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River between Brazil and Paraguay. It’s known for its nighttime light shows and views from the central lookout. The Production Building’s command room controls the dam's turbines. Nearby on the Paraguayan side, the Museum of the Guarani Land has exhibits on indigenous culture. Just north, the Tatí Yupí Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve with trails and birdlife.

Itaipu Binational is a world leader in clean and renewable energy having produced more than 2.6 billion Megawatt hour (MWh) since it started operating, in 1984. With 20 generating unities and 14.000 MW of installed power, Itaipu provides around 15% of the energy consumed in Brazil and 90% of the energy consumed in Paraguay.

  • Pass through the Piracema Canal, without stopping
  • Spillway Lookout, stopping if it is open

General Information

  • The plant is an industrial environment, so the tours can be canceled or their itineraries changed for the plant's own operational reasons, unrelated to the Congress organization.
  • Due to industrial access rules, this attraction is prohibited for children under 14 years.
  • If there are any people with special needs who are part of the group, it is necessary to be informed to us in advance, to adapt the equipment and route.
  • Transfer included and tourism guide;
  • The transfer will leave from the Hotel Bourbon Cataratas Resort parking lot punctually 1 hour before the scheduled visit time;
  • Participants must be at the transfer pick-up point at 1:30 am prior to visiting times, ie 30 minutes prior to the transfer departure time;
  • If your group has a Technical Visit at 08h, be at the boarding point at 06h30;
  • If your group has a Technical Visit at 14h, be at the departure point at 12h30;
  • The transfer will not be able to wait for people arriving after the time defined above, in order not to hinder the visit of other participants;
  • The visit will be made in English in its entirety;
  • Approximate duration: 3 hours visit and 2 hours bus ride.

Visiting procedures

  • It is mandatory to wear closed shoes, without heels, and clothes with knee length during the Technical Visit.
  • It is forbidden to enter with bags, backpacks, bags and the like inside the plant.
  • If necessary, Itaipu has lockers for rent.
  • Cameras, camcorders, cell phones and notebooks are allowed.
